Styling a Vignette in 4 Simple Steps

Sometimes decorating an entire home can seem like an overwhelming task. If picking a starting point paralyzes you, start small. Intentionally grouping objects on a chest, a desk, a shelf, or a table is one of the easiest ways to add interest to a space. Creating vignettes might be my favorite part of styling a home. It’s what makes a home personal and interesting in my opinion. Here are a few things to consider when creating a vignette:

  • Start with anchors. All vignettes need at least one substantial object to provide structure and set the mood. A lamp or candle sticks will add ambience, art will add color, and something sculptural will add softness to the composition of the space. Mirrors can also serve as anchors helping to bounce reflective light around a room.

  • Next, use elements like books, baskets, and bowls to create cohesion. Books are great for adding layers and varying the heights of objects. Baskets add texture, and bowls will help cut down on clutter by corralling miscellaneous objects.

  • Then, bring some nature indoors. Pick up sticks or pinecones on a walk. Cut a branch from a tree. Find pieces of driftwood on the beach. Flowers in a vase, shells in a bowl, or a rock on a stand will add an organic element that will bring life into the space.

  • And lastly, add in something unexpected or something personal to the mix. A clam shell light, a souvenir snow globe, a bright red glass cherry, a light up statue of liberty to create curiosity, spark conversation, and make you smile. Adding an unpredictable element will make your space uniquely yours.
